May 10th was The Buddha's Birthday, which is also the day
Cheung Chau holds their annual
Bun Festival. Read
this article, then
this article, for information about the festival. It is quite unique. Cody had the day off, so we grabbed our friends,
the Julians, and headed to the island.
We arrived just as the parade entries were making their way to the starting point. At the time we thought it was the actual parade so we stopped and watched.

This entry was slightly perplexing. Do you notice anything wrong with this picture? Several feeble, old women carrying the "float" while many young, strong men walk beside them. I don't get it. It must be a religious thing.

"The highlight of the parade is groups of children who are dressed up as gods, hoisted up on a 5ft pole and made to look like they're floating down the streets." -

And don't they look so happy to be there?

By the time the actual parade started we were too late to get a good view, so we were glad we saw the "pre-show." The day was a sweltering 32.9 ° C, (91.22 ° F), with enough humidity I swore off going outside for the rest of the summer. Here is an article about the day:
http://www.thestandard.com.hk/news_detail.asp?pp_cat=30&art_id=110917&sid=32322601&con_type=3.After seeing the bun towers, wandering the island, letting the girls play at the park, and trying the dry, tasteless buns, we opted to get all us exhausted site-seers on the air conditioned boat and head home. In the end, we were all glad we witnessed the festival, but are unconvinced we'll be doing it again. Especially if it is that hot!

That is so cool. They totally do look like they are floating.
