Art Quest

Last week Cody had a day off for Dragon Boat Festival, so we decided to take a couple extra days and head out of town. We started our trip in a small town called Lukang. Cody had wanted to return there ever since he'd visited it during his mission. Our whole motive for visiting the town was to buy Chinese art. We spent the day searching for art shops and enjoying the quaint villages.

On our quest for great art, we came across this piece of work. We loved it so much, we are hoping to one day duplicate it for our own home.

We also found the guy Cody most wanted to come back for. Apparently pretty much every missionary comes here to have a Chinese fan custom painted. Just look at the wall in his shop.

Yup, those are snapshots of him with all the missionaries that have come to buy a fan at his shop. On the right you can see a stack of pictures clipped together; they are various temples and other L.D.S. pictures people brought to have painted on a fan. He even said he'd give us a deal since we are Mormons. He was the cutest, nicest, and--I must add--most talented guy.

We told him what we wanted on our fans, showed him a few pictures and color swatches, and we came away with these two beauties a few hours later.

Later when we stopped for dinner, I had to take Jade to find a diaper changing spot. When I came back to the restaurant, Cody had already ordered for us. I wasn't too concerned until he told me what he ordered: oyster omelet (apparently this town is known for their oysters) and some sort of small shrimp that you eat whole--shell, legs, and all!

I mustered up the courage--after all I really have been wanting to try an oyster omelet--and dug in. The omelet was a gooey slimy mess of a dish. I could handle a few bites and then I was done with it. It really took A LOT of mustering to eat a shrimp though. I have a hard enough time when I just have to de-shell the things on my own, let alone EAT the shell. And I LOVE shrimp! I just didn't know about the whole shell and legs still in tact thing. But I did it. One bite (which equals one shrimp at this size). That's all I could handle. It was a tad crunchy and extremely fishy. I just couldn't bring myself to do anymore. Even Jadyn ate more than I did. I think she had two or three.

Those fan's are amazing. I don't know if I could have eaten that food either. I hope Cody bought you a bing to wash it down with.

He did a beautiful job on those fans! I think it's funny that you want to have that wall art that you found on your way because we have our bedroom done in that very theme!

Those fans are gorgeous! Did you get the little stand that was in the picture for them too? So pretty. And that food? What was Cody thinking? It's like when Sam ordered me tacos al tripas (intestine tacos). What???? Here's the deal Cody, I love oysters. Steamed, baked, fried, raw, smothered in horseradish. However. I have eaten them in every way possible (or so I thought), but in an omelette? Ew. Ew ew ew. There are things that should never be paired: pickles and fruit, meat and ice cream (well, unless it's maple pecan and bacon...yum), intestines and anything, and EGGS and OYSTERS! Ew ew ew ew ew. And Ew. The shrimp? That's really gross too. I could never eat shrimp legs. It's like when you eat crawdads and you're supposed to "suck the head". Gross. I can't even eat them with the head still intact, much less suck the actual head. Gross. Cody, be ashamed. You should have known better.

On another note entirely, I was watching the video from my baby shower of Cody and Sam (do you remember this video? The trivia one?) and it made me so sad. Sam and Cody were so cute in it, it made me pine for the days when we lived 5 minutes away and hung out all the time and would lounge at the pool and make ridiculous dinners just because. I miss you and love you both, and your sweet baby girl. Can't wait for July!!!! Woot wooooooooooooooooo!
