Experiencing High Tea

The Peninsula, built in 1928, is Hong Kong’s oldest hotel and has become a well-known high class historical landmark.IMG_5105

As Hong Kong was formerly a British colony, afternoon tea was introduced by the English and the hotels here have kept the tradition alive.DSC04468

Cody and I have always wanted to experience high tea at The Peninsula, so Saturday we left the kids with some friends and made it a date.

One thing the hotel is known for is its fleet of “Peninsula green” Rolls-Royces.  Cody and I took note of the cars parked out front with the Rolls’:  Ferrari, Bentley, Aston Martin… and then at the end a lowly Mercedes.  (Ha!)  Only The Peninsula could make an E-Class look cheap!

The entry of the lobby was appropriately decorated with a Chinese New Year plum blossom tree.  IMG_5118

“The decadent interior of the Peninsula Hotel is truly magnificent. Adding to the detailed neo-classical arches, shining marble floor, and chandeliers, a string quartet discreetly stands in a corner balcony of the lobby, graciously serenading the dining patrons as bow tied waiters swiftly move across the room.” –Global Gastronomy

Going into it, we didn’t know how long it would take to get a table.  Cody read reviews online that said it could take upwards of two hours.  DSC04442

To kill time, we took yet even more pictures of what will probably be our only experience in this 5-star hotel.  DSC04443

Plus it is a rare occasion when I actually get to be in the same picture as my handsome man!

With our small group of two, we lucked out and got to skip in front of a few larger groups, making our wait in line a short 30 minutes!  Now it was time for the real fun!DSC04456

Afternoon tea is supposed to be about relaxing and enjoying the experience.  It probably goes without saying, but having an afternoon alone with my husband in such a pleasant atmosphere was most definitely calming and rejuvenating.  DSC04453

Traditionally high tea involves scones with clotted cream, finger sandwiches, and sweet pastries, typically stacked on three tiers and eaten in that order.

And for those of you concerned: a variety of tea choices are available, including Mormon-appropriate options, such as mint and rose.   IMG_5091

A lovely, relaxing, and delicious afternoon indeed!

This whole post is amazing. What a fun trip to have with your hubs. That looks like my kind of afternoon. And all those treats look amazing. I also love the silver tea settings. And that you're sitting in front of a Cartier, ya know, no big deal. I want to recreate this whole afternoon in my home. Maybe I will. I've never done "high tea", but I've always wanted to. I have now decided that I'm going to throw myself a high tea party. I may or may not invite anyone else.
